Sweetest Sorrow By J.M. Darhower

When I first head J.M. Darhower was writing a follow up to By Any Other Name, I was elated. I didn’t know if we would ever get a follow-up but here we go and this story ended with quite a bang.

Genna ( with a G) and Matty B are star crossed lovers ( so Romeo & Juliette but with a mob twist) that managed to escape their families in a mock death. But of course the story can’t end there it was too many loose ends one being Genna’s brother Dante. He is a loose cannon, walking through the streets of N.Y. with no purpose and a grudge. Let me tell you Dante has been through it: beaten into a coma, loosing almost all his loved ones and trapped in a world with no one to trust. Until ( it’s always an until) he meets Gabby. She is his nurse well really his only hope because nobody wants to get tangled up in mob business where death seems to be the only outcome. Gabby is a firecracker and although she knows that she shouldn’t cross that line with Dante fate has plans of its own.

I loved that the author showed the two couples in a contrasting light. Dante being the person struggling through light and dark. But really who could blame him? He has lost his purpose and that was hate led by Primo. And then you have Matty who wanted no part of this life but Genna proved him wrong. It was interesting to read about both couples because their relationships were vastly different.

Dante’s story was a little hard to take a times. He was surrounded by death and annoyed me because he kept making silly mistakes. Gavin provided a comic relief and his “friendship” with Dante was cute and odd at the same time. Gabby has a little twist to her story and isn’t all who she seems. Now on the flipside you have Genna and Matty who are on the run and trying to figure out their way in life. Genna is still a firecracker and due to her circumstances refuses to be treated like the ice Queen.

I enjoyed this story and how the author not only focuses on the main characters but the lives of the family members who are in the background pulling the strings. Some parts drug along for me. I really wanted Dante to make a plan or at least heed Gabby’s advice. The story ended well but I do wonder what the next step was for them. It kind of ended with Dante making a plan for his next step but what of Gabby? Does she still work or will that be another story? I was surprised at the number of allies that stood up for both the couples even though the families had bad blood. I will say that what you think you know about these families you don’t. J.M. did a great job of shaking things up and keeping the storyline going. I cannot wait to see what’s next. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.

Target On Our Back By J.M. Darhower

In the words of Drake:

I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
(Once you read the story you will get the reference)

Naz is back and he is working on being a changed man for Karissa. But you know what they say about leopards and all. A man like Naz can’t stay out for long especially when new enemy’s surface and they strike a little too close for home. One of the things I loved is that we got to know more about Naz’s past and the relationship with his father. When all you know is the business how do you move forward?

Karissa….

I was really hoping that she wouldn’t be as naïve but I guess that’s a part of her charm. I felt she was too trusting. i.e. a random stranger sits with her in a restaurant and she starts revealing things she never even told her best friend. In the words of Naz, “huh?” I understand she is a college student and granted she showed it. I guess I wanted more insight or more on their relationship as a married couple. I thought sadly they were boring they never really went anywhere. Even the love scenes were a little lackluster. And Naz?! Some of his character changes like the Drake ring tone was a little funny.

What I did love is the introduction of a few new characters like Scar and his family. The way that ended hopefully the author will give Melody & Leo a story. The epilogue was great. I just felt that Naz & Karissa relationship was a little dry it didn’t have the same spark in the first book sadly. This is just the opinion of one reviewer. Please judge this book for yourselves.

By Any Other Name ( Forbidden Book 1) By: J.M. Darhower

The calm before the storm….

Tick, Tick, Boom…..

Primo Galante lived for his wife and kids until one day it all went up in smoke. You hit they hit back. The Barasantis started it and the Galante’s were determined to finish it. You know how the saying goes, “an eye for an eye.”

An all-out mafia war ensued between the two once friends until one day everything changed. What happens when your sworn enemy becomes the love of your life?

Genna Galante is a wild-child. Her need to be free and independent has landed her in a bit of trouble with the law. Her father is one of the Kings of New York and with that comes certain privileges. Because every action has an opposite reaction Genna has to face some tough love. Having what she thought was the worse day of her life changed into a life changing experience. Fate intervened on Genna’s behalf. Stuck in an elevator with the most hypnotic man she has ever seen. She is drawn to him and he fits her father’s criteria: Italian.

“Matty” Barasanti the one that got away. He is a myth in the streets of New York. Leaving the family business behind to attend college. He is forced to return home and face his demons. Matty never wanted the life that is imposed upon him. Loosing so much as a child has shaped who is as a man.

He meets her in an elevator a friendly wager over a game of pool is made. You can have whatever you like and Matty choose Genna. She is unlike anyone he has ever meet. Although, their story is one of insta-love can their love overcome a long standing family feud written in blood?

J.M. Darhower’s new series By Any Other Name is a spin on Romeo & Juliet, The Hatfields and McCoys with a mob element thrown in.

Genna came off as very annoying and entitled. She had no accountability for any of her actions. Granted she was very young in this story but being who her family was you would think she would be more cautious. It was as if nothing else mattered besides her relationship with Matty. For instance, in one scene her brother gets into a full blown fight with their enemy. They are in enemy territory and instead of trying to stay to see if her brother is ok she leaves with Matty. It has been mentioned more than once in this story that loyalty and family is everything. Genna’s brother Dante is her protector and best friend but to just leave him was a betrayal. Does she not get that her father is the mob and her boyfriend is a mob boss son? Were the risks worth the rewards? People paid for their lives in blood due to the war and their love affair. Did this not affect the relationship? It was never mentioned in the story. It was a few inconsistences in this book. The characters actions mainly Genna didn’t add up with what readers were lead to believe about this mob family.

This book dragged a bit in certain areas. It was a few editing issues at some points I didn’t know who was speaking. The fathers were the mob connection for this book. I wish we would have gotten more of that because for a good portion of the story it felt like a warped version of a young adult Romeo and Juliet book. I know the author does use a few quotes from the Shakespearean book but the execution just wasn’t there.

After all the pain and drama I was looking for more of an emotional reaction. Genna and Matty lost so much but it just felt like the emotions were swept under the rug and we were reading the next scene. The parents were more emotionally charged then the kids. I understand that they didn’t choose this life but they acted as if their actions didn’t add fuel to the fire. It was no self-reflection i.e. did Matty or Genna have any doubt about continuing on with their relationship. It was just we are in love so who cares? It wasn’t much relationship development given. The cat and mouse game between the two in the beginning was a good chunk of the story. Towards the end of this story it really turned around and I wanted to know more about what was going to happen. This author writes really good mob stories that are gritty and emotionally charged but this story lacked much of that mob element. I hope the next book in this story focuses more on that versus the teenaged love affair. I enjoy this author’s work and honestly look forward to the next book in this series this story just fell a little flat for me. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.

The story of star-crossed lovers caught in the middle of the biggest rivalry New York has ever seen, determined to make it… if only they can survive their parents' feud.

Teaser:

"A Roman Coke," Genna mused. "What's that?"

"It's rum and Coke. We just call it a Roman Coke around here."

"Because you're Italian?"

"And because when you get drunk enough, it all just slurs together anyway."

"Ah." Genna picked hers up, motioning toward him with it. "So what are we drinking to?"

"Today."

"Today?"

He nodded. "Right now, this moment. Let's drink to it."

Smiling, she clinked her glass with his. "Today, then."

They threw them back at the same time. The liquor hit Genna's taste buds and she grimaced, the vicious burn seeping down her throat and settling deep in her chest. "Ugh, is there even any Coke in this damn thing?"

Matty laughed, setting his empty glass down. "Just a splash."

"I couldn't tell."

"That's because I prefer it that way," he responded. "Strong and rough, enough to leave a lingering ache. I like it to hurt just a bit."

Oh good God. Those words sent a chill down Genna's spine, one she couldn't hide, as Matty waved for the waitress. Eyes never leaving Genna, he ordered another round of drinks.

"Another?" she asked, picking up the water to take another sip, this one to soothe the sting in her chest. "You said one drink."

A sly smile curved his lips. "I like to keep them coming."

"Is that right?"

"Absolutely." Matty stood, leaning across the table, his lips near her ear. "Maybe you'll let me show you later."

Torture To Her Soul (Monster In His Eyes Book 2) By: J.M. Darhower

Torture to her Soul is the much anticipated sequel to the book Monster in His Eyes I suggest reading the first book before you start this story. I was so elated when I got chosen to review this book before it got released.
The story begins with a prologue that gives readers a glimpse into Naz's past and why he is the proverbial Monster. I loved that majority of the story was told from Naz P.O.V. and that we got a better glimpse into the business side of things. As a reader I though this story was way more detailed than the first. We really get to see how Naz really breaks and becomes semi-whole again with the growing love he and Karissa shares. This book begins right where the other book left off. One of the many things I enjoyed is that the author didn't have Karissa immediately forgive Naz she really showed the complexity of destroying trust in a relationship and the hard work it takes to get it back. Because Karissa is so young and naïve she is often a brat in this story but with good reason I her words, "you can't act like you love me then destroy my world the very next." Because she is so hurt and confused by Naz she does everything in her power to avoid him at all costs. Karissa picks up a "cooking" habit which is very funny because the book has some very serious moments. There is a bit of a slow build up and at times I was left waiting for something to happen the anticipation was killing me. Some of the scenes in the book are day to day living with Naz and Karissa. At about 46% the book picks up.
I understand Karrisa being hesitant with her relationship with Naz but she often gives him false hope and it's very frustrating. The back and forth with her emotions annoyed me at times but it was necessary because throughout all of this Karrisa really does build character and presents herself as no longer a scared young girl. We really get to notice the age difference between the two Karrisa is very young but that doesn't mean she can't teach Naz a thing or two. I love that as readers we get to so the inner turmoil and the demons but characters have to battle. One of the highlights for me was dinner with Ray I was shouting finally some drama! Because this book is told primarily from Naz perspective we get introduced to some characters from his past like his family. And with Naz actions speaks louder than words he literally shows Karrisa who he is and it's not all pretty. But that's what love is it won't all be pleasant but you can't help who you love.
Who you think you know and have figured out you don't. I won't give too much of the story away but Naz's inner circle slowly but surely changes and not all for the better. Throughout the book I wondered what did Naz eat. All of the times in the book when they went out he barely ate. How did he sustain himself? I really wanted more from the ending for these two. I know they got closure but I would have liked a glimpse into the future for them. The way the author leaves this story I feel as though there is room for a third story. I was left with some unanswered questions. What happened to Karrisa friend? What has Naz decided for his future? With the little bit of information we were given I am begging the author for a third story. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can't wait to see what else the author has in store. I would definitely recommend this book. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.

Made A Sempre Novel By: J.M. Darhower

Corrado Moretti had a hard introduction to life. His mother Erica was a drunk and father Vito was absent but his secret life would have long lasting effects on the family. Corrado has learned at a very young age never to get attached to anyone either they leave you or the hurt is just too much to process. Because of this hard lesson Corrado has not allowed himself to feel anything except one summer when he and his twin sister are dropped off to the DeMarco’s for protection. There he meets young free spirited Celia being in her presence ignites something in him and from there the attraction between the two grows.

This story is told in parts and each part equals the whole of the man who is Corrado Moretti. Like I mentioned his introduction to life wasn’t pleasant his mother was an abusive drunk, his sister was a manipulator and his father although he wasn’t there was young Corrado’s savior. Out of desperation Corrado chooses a life that would be his life until death. La Cosa Nostra “this thing of ours” because for Corrado that’s all it could ever be. He works his way up in the Mob by taking on a job that no one else could do or even willing to do this gets him noticed by the boss and brings him back full circle to Celia his enchantress.

Much of this story is about Corrado’s life inside the Mob. Having no emotional attachments works for Corrado especially being one of the DeMarco’s notorious hit men. Although, wanting to be like his father Vito who is a Captain in this family, Corrado makes his own way and become’s a man of his word which is a direct contrast to his spineless father. Parts of his life in the Mob are very hard to read at times especially when the subject of human trafficking appears but the author gives a great contrast of his Mob life to the life he has with Celia.

Celia is very sassy knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to use her charm to get it. Growing up in the life she offers Corrado a comfort he can get nowhere else. If ever there was a definition to ride or die chick Celia would be it. As I mentioned beforehand some of the subject matter in this book is very heavy I liked the contrast between his relationship with Celia which was very playful to the seriousness of the Mob life. This added a little light to the darkness that is Corrado’s life. Made is very complex and is told in layers just when you think you know something another layer is unfolded.

I do wish that more would have been told of his relationship with Celia. I wanted more interaction between the two. Some information I felt could have been omitted and more insight could have been given to other areas. This story is not your usual HEA lets ride in the sunset kind of book. It’s very dark and heavy and being the lifestyle that they live the ending was as it should be. At times I was very frustrated with Corrado’s lack of emotion I wanted him to speak up say something fight the abusers back but as the quote goes, “In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.”
There is a line in the book that says, “without villains there would be no superheroes.” I think this is very poignant because it leaves the reader to guess who played what role in this story. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.
