Lies You Tell By LaQuette

Lies You Tell
by
LaQuette
Blurb:
A mob boss finding his dead lover alive six years after her death, shocking.  Learning they’ve got a five-year-old son…deadly.

Six years ago Sanai Ward fled her life in Florida when her lover’s infidelity nearly brings her life to a fiery end.  Scared and devastated, Sanai starts over from nothing, determined to create a safe and happy life for the child she discovers she’s carrying.

Single parenthood isn’t easy. But the joy of watching her beloved Nazario thrive is more than enough motivation to ignore the ache in her heart for the man that shattered her soul.

Dante De Luca is a passionate man who’s had his life stolen from him.  Six years ago he was in love and happy, until his woman was killed in a fire. Sanai was gone.  There was nothing left in the ashes but the locket he’d placed around her neck.  Too angry to deal with his loss, Dante seeks to make the rest of the world pay for his broken heart by forming an unholy covenant with an unspeakable ally.  He knows he’ll live to regret it, but signing away your humanity to the devil seems meaningless when your soul is already gone.

When an accident involving a family member draws Dante to New York, and forces an unexpected meeting between he and Sanai, Dante has to decide what’s more important.  His rage and revenge, or the safety of the woman he once loved and the health of their son?

Just when Sanai’s deception is beginning to sting less, Dante is faced with the fallout of his own lies.  Will she forgive him?  Will they survive them, or will their lives become tragic casualties of the dangerous lies he told?

Excerpt:

Dante smiled as the little man walked off. Something inside him broke. Just those few minutes in the kid’s presence, and Dante felt equal measures of love and sadness.

He felt tears filling his eyes. Dante jumped up from his seat to make his way out of the apartment. Just before he could pull the front door open, he felt Sanai’s hand press against his arm.

“Dante?”

“He’s beautiful. Everything I ever thought our son would be.”

He couldn’t look at her—yeah, it was silly, but he came from one of those households where men didn’t cry, and especially not in front of their women.

“I’m sorry, Dante.”

That fucking word sorry was really beginning to piss him off. She’d used it over and over again today, and somehow he never felt better after she uttered it.

“Whatever, Sanai,” he answered. “You did what you did for your own reasons. I understand those reasons, but it doesn’t hurt any less. Five minutes in front of him was all it took to show me how much I’ve lost. That time with him will never come again.”

He passed a rough hand down his face and looked at her. “I’m not missing another moment. You’d better be prepared for that.”

He didn’t give her a chance to respond. He walked out into the brisk air and headed to the car. He sent a quick text off to Big Tony asking him to meet Dante at their favorite Italian spot near the hospital. Only a man who loved his son would be able to help Dante now.

An omission of the truth is still a lie…..

Dante loved Sanai with everything in him. She was the one, his one, until the fire. He lost everything except the necklace she wore around her neck. Years later he sees that face again only it can’t be her because she is dead. Searching like a mad man to find out whose face it could be that has haunted him, Dante runs into some horrible truths that are a direct result of what he didn’t say.
Sanai had no idea loving someone could hurt so badly. She had to escape after witnessing something such horrible deaths. For her it was the only way out. Only she didn’t disappear by herself she took something of Dante’s and his back to claim them both back.
Sanai never stopped loving Dante so when he makes an appearance back into her life everything is thrown off balance. Finding out about their son Naz has the Don ( Dante) trying to make some much needed changes in his life. But you know the underworld nothing is ever that easy. He has many enemies and some who share his last name. It’s a fight for life and love but Dante is willing to show them all why he is named the Don.

Although this is a mob romance I loved the baby aspect that was thrown in. Naz is sick and his illness brings out the humanity in Dante. No parent likes to see their child helpless. Dante will do anything to keep Naz alive even if it means having another baby.

Some elements of this story were predictable like the two of them coming together to save their child. Although I wish it was a little more conflict or build-up between Sanai and Dante. i.e. after he finds out that she is a alive they end up back in bed together so quickly. After all Sanai has been threw and I know dealing with her son’s illness wasn’t easy but she could have made him grovel. Her best friend had a little more sass when it came to Dante. The author didn’t focus too heavily on the mob aspect this was more a romance story for me. Yes, Dante is the Don but he was with Sanai most of the time.

Dante really annoyed me because as the boss how do you turn your back on your enemies knowing that they will strike (and have already shown you the destruction they can cause)? I won’t give too much a way but let’s just say he has a lot of secrets that eventually come out and they are explosive. I enjoyed the relationship that Dante, Sanai and Naz share and dealing with his illness there were some very heartfelt moments. Dante does have a life back in Florida and a certain someone who thinks they he belongs to her it could be because they share the same last name. Now I know some people don’t like what could be considered an infidelity story BUT this story is not that. Yes he has what could be considered a wife but more like a business partner because the only thing they share is a name. (Don’t let that part discourage you as a reader) I thoroughly enjoyed this story it was fast moving and kept me interested. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.

Spice Level HOT

SET UP: Madelyn is in hiding from an unknown threat and she calls the one man who can help her, a handsome, frightening stranger who has already helped her once. A man who left her his phone number in case of an emergency. The man of her fantasies who is now standing before her.

***

“Why (call) me?” he asks.

I blink, his question catching me by surprise. “I, um, needed you . . .” I forget what I’m about to say, forget everything as I feel his hand skim across my abdomen.

Oh my God. His touch is just as I imagined it . . . maybe slightly rougher with the friction.

“This why?”

“This why…?” I swallow hard. It’s like I’m an open book and he’s reading the naughty, dirty descriptions I’ve written about him…about us. And now, he’s putting my words, my desires, into action.

“You called me?”

I gasp, as his palm presses against my skin, firmly like there’s no mistaking it’s there yet not hard enough to be a punishing touch. “I don’t know what to say.”

“Just as well.” He slides his hand lower, his fingertips dipping beneath my bikini bottom.

Oh. OH.

This is what you want from me? To get you off with my fingers. To make you come from my touch. Make you whimper my name and beg for more. Finish what that punk couldn’t manage to do?”

My mind races in a mad dash with my heartbeat. Is this what I want? Now, under these circumstances? “I can’t whimper your name,” I remind him. “I don’t know your name.” And there he goes again…what does he mean by “that little punk?”

I stiffen with surprised excitement mixed in with a hell of a lot of well-earned nervousness when he rubs me there, circling around my sensitive hood and causing a tingle to spread throughout my body.

But he doesn’t stop there. Oh. My. God. He’s moving lower, arching his finger so the tip pushes into my entrance…penetrating me a fraction of an inch.

“I don’t know anything about you,” I whisper, “and you wrote to call in case of an emergency. I have no one else to turn to…”

He freezes, suddenly tense. Then he shakes his head. Abruptly, his hand is gone, leaving me cold where a second ago I was warm. Wickedly, wildly warm. With a swift kick, he knocks my duffle bag out of his way and stalks into the bathroom.

I hear water running, and I bite my lip.

Nothing is clear. Everything is twisted…even my allowing him to touch me like that. What’s come over me?

Minutes pass before he reenters the bedroom. His hair is wet yet again. But his manner is different. Frigid. Ice cold, as he stands beside the bed, scowling down at me.

“What’s going to happen next is your own fault.”

I blink, fighting against the glare from the lamp that’s reflecting off the cool metal object he’s holding in his hand.

Shit. Oh. Shit.

He’s picked up the knife.

Blurb

In the light of darkness is an undeniable need to run, disappear, slither away only barely scraping by with hope that maybe just maybe, there's a way of escape.
My name is Oliva Basari. I escaped one hell only to be trapped inside another, darkness and fear seething through my veins and invading my every thought.
A new city, a new job, a new persona and then.... I fell in lust, I fell in love…hell, I just fell.
From the darkness my alter ego became real, I was Tess, the stirring of someone or something else burning in my gut until she was all there was.
I didn't fear what would happen if remorse knocked on my door nor did I fear the lustful way I stalked them, preyed upon them—the ones that couldn't have me, the ones who wished they could taste me—I was their darkness until I met one very tall, dark, and forbiddingly handsome Mr. Black. He hated me watching with darkness in his tormented eyes. He scared me, intimidated me, and left me questioning my own sanity.

Until he didn't.

He was the one thing I let myself submit too, his touch, the way he slid his knuckles across my flesh, igniting a dangerous spark inside of me.
In the end, we're all captured souls waiting for release or the escape from our own maniacal thoughts.
In the end, we are all prisoners of the flesh.

Excerpt

Sometimes we just have to live the fantasy in order to feel human again.

“It’s so peaceful out here,” she whispers.

“Yeah … I love it.”

“I just wish I could get up and stand under the trees. Just for a little while.”

I sit up and look at her, waiting until she opens her eyes. “Just standing or more?”

She smiles as she cocks her head towards me. “And maybe dance a little. If I could.”

The left side of my lips perk up into a smile. “You can.”

I get up from the bench, stand in front of her, and hold out both my hands.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

“Take my hands.”

“Why?” She looks at them tentatively.

“Just take them.”

It takes her a while to agree, probably because she’s scared. But there’s no reason to be. I won’t let her fall. I never will.

I pull her up into standing position.

“Hold onto me for support,” I say, and then take a step back until I’m so far back she has to come to me. “C’mon. Don’t be scared. I’m here.”

One, two, three. Hop. Her leg sways, but she stays put, putting every ounce of weight on my arms.

“Again,” I say, taking another step back and tugging her with me.

She goes along with it, taking another step of blind faith.

I never take my eyes off her as she continues to hop closer to me. Not even when we reach the center of the field. Leaves are scattered all around us, and when the wind blows a cascade of more leaves follow. Some drop on her head, making her giggle as she brushes them off.

Still, I can’t stop looking.

I’m no longer afraid or embarrassed about it.

I simply am … in love.

“What now?” she asks.

I pull her as close as I can so I can wrap both my arms around her. “Put your arms around my neck.”

She complies, her fingers lacing behind my neck. I can feel the warmth of her skin against mine, and as I soak in the heat of the sun I feel invigorated, strong. Strong enough to carry her across the ocean and back.

In one go I lift her up, her cheerful squeal creating goosebumps all over my body. Then I start to move my feet, one by one, until I’m no longer just walking … Until I’m dancing in a whirlwind of leaves … dancing with her in my arms.

The beauty of this place fades in comparison to her.

And even though I adore every inch of her presence, I do not deserve her.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t fulfill her dreams.

Her smile is wide, her teeth sparkling in the light of the sun. She looks so happy. Happier than I’ve ever seen her, and it fills me with something I’ve never experienced before. Hope.

After spinning and circling around for so many times, my head is getting dizzy, so I slowly come to a stop and admire the renewed look on her face. Her rosy cheeks. Her tousled hair floating in the wind. She leans away and grabs my hands as I pull her back to the seat once again.

The Protector By Jodi Ellen Malpas

JEM is the Queen of writing the tortured alpha-male and Jake is no exception. He has a lot of demons, ex-military with ptsd and no reason to move forward except for his job as a bodyguard. To be honest Jake is a mess. If he isn’t drunk he is with whatever flavor of the week. His past has ruined him and haunts him daily. He gets the call to be a bodyguard for this one case involving a rich brat (or so he thinks) but one look at her face he is battling whatever emotion she evokes in him.

Camille is fiery she is the complete opposite of what Jake thinks. She has a dream and an ex who is a druggie and abusive. Wanting nothing do with her father’s fortune or the mistakes of her past, Camille sets out to make a way for herself and nowhere in those plans was to fall in love with Jake.

So, this is one of those insta-love, insta-crazy type of stories. I will say that Camille doesn’t just give into Jake’s charms. She drives him crazy and I loved her little tests she put him through. At times Camille could be a little petty just to make Jake mad. I found the “lingerie” scene very funny. I did want more of an explanation to why these two were together besides just the physical attraction.

Jake’s character is very complex especially with the secrets he carried. And it kind of made me a little annoyed because he was ready to lay down tooth and nail for Camille but for reasons he can’t explain but not face his past? I didn’t really feel the connection between the two characters they barely have a conversation and when they do it’s him being broody and her with her Elvis sneer. The angle with her father and the case dragged on and kind of fizzled. One thing that made this story for me was Abbie and Charlotte. I will say that this book does have the element of suspense. A few parts left me confused i.e. in one scene Jake is going to meet Abbie and it’s all planned out but Camille asks where he is going. Then the next page she all of a sudden knows where he is going and all the details? For such a young age Charlotte has a good grasp on things and is very articulate. I did like the ending of the book I thought it was really sweet. This book wasn’t my favorite by JEM. There were parts that I enjoyed but overall it kind of dragged on. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.

Sweetest Sorrow By J.M. Darhower

When I first head J.M. Darhower was writing a follow up to By Any Other Name, I was elated. I didn’t know if we would ever get a follow-up but here we go and this story ended with quite a bang.

Genna ( with a G) and Matty B are star crossed lovers ( so Romeo & Juliette but with a mob twist) that managed to escape their families in a mock death. But of course the story can’t end there it was too many loose ends one being Genna’s brother Dante. He is a loose cannon, walking through the streets of N.Y. with no purpose and a grudge. Let me tell you Dante has been through it: beaten into a coma, loosing almost all his loved ones and trapped in a world with no one to trust. Until ( it’s always an until) he meets Gabby. She is his nurse well really his only hope because nobody wants to get tangled up in mob business where death seems to be the only outcome. Gabby is a firecracker and although she knows that she shouldn’t cross that line with Dante fate has plans of its own.

I loved that the author showed the two couples in a contrasting light. Dante being the person struggling through light and dark. But really who could blame him? He has lost his purpose and that was hate led by Primo. And then you have Matty who wanted no part of this life but Genna proved him wrong. It was interesting to read about both couples because their relationships were vastly different.

Dante’s story was a little hard to take a times. He was surrounded by death and annoyed me because he kept making silly mistakes. Gavin provided a comic relief and his “friendship” with Dante was cute and odd at the same time. Gabby has a little twist to her story and isn’t all who she seems. Now on the flipside you have Genna and Matty who are on the run and trying to figure out their way in life. Genna is still a firecracker and due to her circumstances refuses to be treated like the ice Queen.

I enjoyed this story and how the author not only focuses on the main characters but the lives of the family members who are in the background pulling the strings. Some parts drug along for me. I really wanted Dante to make a plan or at least heed Gabby’s advice. The story ended well but I do wonder what the next step was for them. It kind of ended with Dante making a plan for his next step but what of Gabby? Does she still work or will that be another story? I was surprised at the number of allies that stood up for both the couples even though the families had bad blood. I will say that what you think you know about these families you don’t. J.M. did a great job of shaking things up and keeping the storyline going. I cannot wait to see what’s next. Please judge this book for yourselves and not based on this one review.
