Summer Reading List

During the summer I always try to compile a list of books to read, not that it would be hard my t.b.r. list is ridiculous. I find it so much easier during the Summer to catch up on everything especially t.v. shows. The kids are out of school, work is slowing down so what's better then the beach and a good read? Problem is I have yet to compile this list and I desperately want to read something good doesn't have to be heavy after all you want something light and fun for the beach. My questions is: What's on your Summer Reading List????

News & Updates

Ok I cannot lie I have been so slack!!!! I finally got my internet back up and instead of writing reviews I have been catching up on shows and resting. Not to make any excuses but in my line of work mental health is essential and taking a time out is much needed.

I know authors depend on reviews and I promise I am going to get back to doing what I do. But I have to give a shout out to Author D.A. Young ( I haven't forgotten about you). Her latest book A Circle of Friends is a great mix of a coming of age story and hot romance!! Let me tell you this lady knows how to tell a story with well developed characters. I always say this but I cannot wait to read the next story from her.

So one of the things that I love to do is to read other peoples reviews. I know some other reviewers will say that they don't read reviews they just post. But I live for reviews!!! I think they are very telling. I say that to say that just recently a book dropped from a well known IR author and all of the reviews I saw at the time either 5 or 1 star said nothing about the book but the upload issues on Amazon. The one star reviews were complaints because the book didn't upload. That's not a review for the book BUT one for Amazon. So in defense the authors fans posted five star reviews stating that yes it was upload issues but don't rate a book before you read it. Now I do agree that Amazon shouldn't allow people to post reviews until they read the story. But the 5 star reviewers stated they didn't read the story either but that the author was great. So I am confused!!! You mad about people reviewing without reading story  but you are doing the same thing just in favor of the author?! Amazon has got to do a better job at policing these reviews. As many times as they remove my reviews or wont post them I am shocked that they allow that mess with the non-reviews to continue. I was going to be a little petty and state some other mess I recently witnessed about some of these authors and the whole issue of publishing on the same day and the drama behind that. BUT I won't go there but I will love to see how it all plays out.

**On another note this is political season so people don't forget to vote or register to vote.**

Blog Updates

So on my blog I have a link for reviews/author spotlights etc. Well I had no idea until I checked my spam folder that I have gotten so many requests. I apologize to all the authors who wanted to send an arc or just wanted promo that I never got back to. While I am reviewing less these days I don't mind doing an author spotlight for upcoming releases. Now that I have fixed the "spam" issue I promise to get back with you.

I have a few more arcs to work through ( a previous commitment) and then I will be focusing more on promo. Not that I still wont be reading I will just be reviewing less. And I know, I know reviews help authors ( and I am not saying that when I get a book I wont review) its just that life happens and I haven't had much time to actually sit down a read.

On another note I recently got picked to judge a few books for an upcoming contest ( more details coming soon) Any-who thanks for rocking with me.

Yours Series By Blue Saffire

Many authors have what I call a theme or a formula for their books. For many, it could be the genre, e.g., mafia, baby, etc.,  but for some, it could be the actual characters themselves. Let me explain. Author Blue Saffire, in her recent release of the Yours series, discusses briefly why she, in many of her books, describes her black female characters with less than traditional African American features. For instance, many, if not most of her black heroines have light eyes and/or blonde hair. As we all know, black people come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and skin tones, and I think it’s great that we celebrate our own diversity. But you know me; there is always a “but” in there; it just seems, and not just this author, that I have noticed in the IR genre in general, an overwhelming amount of seemingly black heroines possess European features. Again, I completely understand that we all don’t have brown eyes and kinky hair, etc., but goodness, what is the percentage of us who do have “chocolate” skin also have blonde hair and blue eyes? And, is it so wrong to write a character with traditional African features? With “chocolate” skin, curvy body, natural hair, and brown eyes? I honestly get what the author is doing and am impressed that throughout her story, she touches briefly on colorism and loving your features no matter how different they are from the “norm”. But is this celebrating our diversity or is it mainstreaming your work? (This is not to say this author does this. I honestly want to know because this has been more prevalent in this genre in an effort to be more universally appealing to non-black readers). Ok, I am going to get off my soapbox and get to this review:

This review, as you will soon be able to tell, will be a combination of both books in the series.

One thing I will say is that because all of these stories contain characters from her other series, a clearer family tree is sorely needed. Though the author does provide a character roster in all of her books, a clearer and more structured family tree or list is needed because there is constant crossover and new additions with each new installment or series. I say this because, and I don’t know if many other readers caught on to this, but in the first book of the series Yours, Kimmie is “pregnant”, but readers don’t know this because it’s not discussed in the first book, although the author gives it away in her list of characters.

Sephora is a beauty, but with like most of these stories, she doesn’t realize her own worth or appeal. Her mother has always put her down, and she feels like the ugly duckling. One night, she meets the handsome and dominant (Although, as a reader, I really didn’t get that vibe from him) Nick Lincoln who changes her life. Nick enjoys being in control of all things and because of his past has many demons. He is captivated by Sephora, and once she comes of age, whether she knows it or not, she is his.

In the first story, Sephora is running from Nick and essentially from herself. She doesn’t know who she is (not in an amnesiac way, but trying to find her way), and everyone has an opinion about how she should live her life. I get that this series is supposed to include BDSM, but honestly, it didn’t read like a BDSM story. It did include some BDSM elements like the collar and playroom, but it wasn’t fully fleshed out. I just felt like this was added as a tag-on. Let me explain. Nick collars Sephora, but she doesn’t even know the significance of a collar until her brother explains to her what the necklace represents. Huh? Isn’t that a Dom’s responsibility? And all the men, including Sephora’s brother Luke, have a “darkness” that can only be explored through BDSM because of their past. (Sounds cliché much?)

Now in the second story, it’s all the back and forth with Sephora and Nick, the “I love you’s and I will never leave you’s:, we get it.  There were chapters of them saying the same thing repeatedly but in different POVs.  I felt like it was more to the story, but the author wasted space going over the same thing. I actually liked the idea of this story but more was needed to the story. The author kept repeating herself with these characters. It was the same fight and argument every other chapter. And the sex scenes? Nothing seemed fresh, which is sad because this story could have been better if the author explored more of the suspenseful aspect of the story and not just adding superfluous scenes.

The author mentions that all of her stories build on each other and that readers will see a crossover of many characters from her other series. I don’t take issue with this, but a timeline is sorely needed. Because there are so many characters in these books, it’s virtually a mind overload trying to keep up with all of them and figure out what’s going on, and the actual time the story is taking place. The many nicknames that each character has only adds to the confusion. It is honestly difficult to say that this was truly Nick & Sephora’s story because there were so many characters and aspects of the story.

I will say that editing is much improved from her earlier series, but it was still hard at times to tell who was doing the talking. Things are happening in these stories, but they are not really fleshed out. A new chapter begins, and the reader is to infer what happened next. Events and happenings seem a little all over the place and include many chapters of just the author narrating and no character interaction or movement. And all of Sephora’s insecurities are like whiplash— she is strong and confident and proclaims to fight for her man one minute and then the next, one misunderstanding or Nick speaking with another woman, she becomes withdrawn.

When Sephora does finally find’s her voice, she makes silly decisions. For example, she knows the story of his ex and his parents and is warned repeatedly to stop digging. Although she knows it’s dangerous, she continues on, yet one disparaging comment about Nick and she breaks down? These stories, although fused with a promising element of suspense, are drowned out by the characters defending their relationship and Sephora trying yet again to come to terms with their relationship.

In conclusion, this is not a personal attack on the author, so please don’t take this personally. As a reader, this is my opinion, and yes, a review is an opinion. This is not the gospel, and no, I don’t expect others to agree with me, so save the comments from the fan girls. While this wasn’t my favorite book by the author, this is not to discourage others from reading the series. I’ve actually enjoyed Blue Saffire’s work, specifically, The Brothers Black series. I just didn’t love this story. It seemed rushed and not fully fleshed out. Please don’t judge this book based on this one review but for yourselves.

Catching Up with CoCo

I have been on a little hiatus. School is out and I can finally get to my summer reading list! I love to review but it becomes daunting at times. Sometimes I just want to read a book and discuss with friends. I know reviews help authors but as a blogger who does review you can get burned out really quickly. And now with Amazon playing games with many of my reviews I just stopped doing it all together. I would post a review for an author and Amazon would come up with some lame excuse of how my review "violated" the rules. Of course I challenged this and the next day the review would be up. But this is an annoyance especially when you have arcs and authors are wanting to see the review posted. I dont know what can be done about this. All I can say is that buying the books shows support as well. Since I am on break I have challenged myself to finally put some reviews up. I have discovered many great authors and found myself rereading books I haven't ever reviewed ( slack I know).

I was in a book funk but let me tell you the funk has been lifted!!!! I recently discovered D.A. Young and let me tell you this author is the truth. I love her way of storytelling and the fact that its a series that builds off the next story. Oh and the fact that you dont have to wait long for the next book to be released. One of my favorite authors Aleatha Romig has a new thriller out. I seriously read this book in one night and look forward to the follow-up. And how could I forget Danielle Allen? Her new book is a great romance especially for a beach day. Reviews will be coming soon on all these books and more!

Beta Readers vs. Editors

Lately I have seen a trend of authors using beta readers as editors. I don’t know if this is to take out the middle man or it’s an issue of pay. In my opinion the two are very different and serve different purposes the same with readers who receive arcs. They are all very distinct roles. I have a friend who recently became an editor. By this I meant took classes and has plenty experience beta reading in which she was essentially editing without getting paid. So below I have listed a few definitions provided by google.

Beta reader:  are not explicitly proofreaders or editors, but can serve in that context. Elements highlighted by beta readers encompass things such as plot holes, problems with continuity, characterization or believably; in fiction and non-fiction, the beta might also assist the author with fact-checking.

Editor: a person having managerial and sometimes policy-making responsibility related to the writing, compilation, and revision of content for a publishing firm or for a newspaper, magazine, or other publication.

Now this definition is subjective an editor for the purpose I am using it for which is for authors who are mainly self-published answer to the author. This means that yes a work or publication may have an editor but the author has the final say.

My issue comes in and please let me know your thoughts on this is that I have also seen authors use these small time editors ( much like themselves Indie trying to make a name for themselves) and then present the book to a publishing house. Let me go deeper there is nothing wrong with paying for a service and try to come up. But don’t use these small time editors for service cheat them in not only payments but a simple thank you. I know its business and a thank you isn’t necessarily needed but don’t cheat me and then present your work as this is all you when you got help and someone to help you write the body of work. I don’t understand the level of shadeness with these authors lately. You want to whine and complain about reviews and other authors but you yourself contribute to this foolishness?

What is Diversity?

Recently an author friend of mine presented me with this opportunity to blog for another website a few blog posts  here and there. Granted this certain opportunity wasn't through her personally but something she stumbled upon. Of course I am so down for anything to network and share my oh so fabulous opinion! Well long story short these people were looking to diversify ( there is that word people love to use often). So I reached out and of course like many people who throw out that word "diversity" it means many things to many different people. If I had time and thought people cared I would tell you what diversity isn't!!!! But a long story short diversity isn't lip service its inclusive you cant pick and choose what it is and then exclude the very same people you claim you support.

I open this up to readers, authors, twitter followers: " what does diversity mean to you?"

Upcoming Posts

So while I haven't been posting  (reviews) as much I have been reading and taking notes. This upcoming week and for the month of December I will be posting a few reviews, author spotlights, and of course a few opinion pieces.

Because December is a month of giving I am going to start giving people a free "reading" lessons. I have witnessed so much foolishness on Amazon, Goodreads and other social media outlets its ridiculous. But a word for the wise for those who have challenged my opinions/ reviews ( which is just one person thoughts on something not the gospel)

Seriously people its book reviews and just because someone didn't find it their cup of tea doesn't mean others won't enjoy it. I will say all my reviews come from a place of help and just me sharing thoughts on different books. I am always a lady and stand by everything I have said in reviews. ( Stay tuned like I said more reviews, and posts that will ruffle a few feathers are sure to come).

Where Are All The Good Reads?

Paula Cole used to have this song out called, "where have all the cowboys gone?" I feel that way about books  now. Where have all the good books gone? I am in such a reading dry spell. I don’t know what it is but not much is grabbing my attention.( or it could be that the market is flooded with a bunch of non-writers just cashing in). Most titles are alpha this, stepbrother that, or a series that has no follow-up in sight. I know, I know that writing is hard work. I mean I just have a blog and a work life and it’s hard for me to post reviews daily so I cant imagine writing a book. But when you post more on your FB status and go into detail about all the drama in your life why can’t you devote more time to writing? I have said this plenty a times but FB will make you dislike people. I know it’s a social network but one cant be mad when readers comment on your private affairs that you have made public?

So please Twitter, bloggers, Facebookers if you have any reading suggestions tag me, inbox me I read across genres and am looking for a stimulating read.

Free Reading Lesson

So many were already warned so here you go!!!!!

Has anyone else noticed that there is a lack of love stories lately? I mean true romance stories. You know the type of stories where two people meet fall in love and wait there actually is an ending. Lately the stories out are alpha this, stepbrother that, and my favorite lets attach a color to the title so it will sell. I am so over series, and not even really that the lack of endings and mostly importantly editing. You want me a consumer/reader to invest in your work and you can’t even invest in yourself?

And let me just address the haters. And this is not so much for the readers but authors. How does another author writing in the same genre hurt you? I thought a little competition was healthy. If you are so secure and your work is so good why are you so mad? I have noticed lately authors bashing each other or in their groups trashing other authors work because they can’t see how their competition books are selling. Here is a clue and its business 101 why don’t you do your research?
Also what’s with authors rating their books on goodreads or even beta reading other authors books? Hell your stuff isn’t even edited how can you edit someone else stuff? Why people?! I honestly just miss good books and the only interaction readers had with authors were letters or emails. I mean social media will really make you give the side-eye to some folks. Please and take heed keep the drama to your books. You don’t need to attack readers because you don’t like their review which is a personal opinion. And you don’t need to whine and complain about it. Girl bye!!!! Everybody won’t like you. Hell half my reviews are not liked and marked unfavorable. And you know what I don’t complain because opinions are a dime a dozen.
This is the big doozy right here!!!! Remember when authors used to go on and on about please review my work or arcs for an honest review? Well now they don’t want that I have gotten emails that if the review is 3 stars or less not to post it. Really?! So you don’t want honesty? You don’t want to grow? So lie to you and then wonder why you are not making any sort of bestseller list but have to tag your book something its not just to get a high ranking?! Did I go there?!

More To Come....

I will admit I have been a little slack on blogging lately not because of lack of material. Believe me if you follow any author, participate in "reading" groups ( notice I put reading in quotes because these groups or the ones I have witnessed mainly do anything but discuss books) but I digress. You will notice that with any social media authors and readers never lack the drama. I say all this to say that your girl CoCo Fierce is back!!! More reviews to come in the following weeks and my opinion pieces. I have been noticing a lot and have much to say. My only question is.....

Get Your Library Card: The Reading Room

Happiness is a Library Card. Welcome To The Reading Room.

Lately I have noticed a trend with a lot of these covers in the IR world. I may step on a lot of toes with this but this is my truth. I know I am not the only one who dislikes greatly when the cover of a book doesn’t match the description of the book. For instance darkened photos.

Just for why?

A few well known black authors have used photos of white women and the reason I know this is because it is a stock photo and used on many white books and now are darkened for IR books. Is this some sort of modern day black face? I mean really what is the problem? I have seen people say that there aren’t many diverse photos out there. While this is sad but whenever there is a lack of anything in our community we created a way. We were separated from schools so guess what we started our on schools/colleges. We created a genre IR for women who look like us. ( I will come back to this one). My issue is please create your photos and stop using white women and darkening them up it just looks bad and frankly cheesy. You want to appeal to a broader audience well cool but don’t pimp this mess in our groups for our support and then describe the woman as anything other than black because you want mass appeal.  But the men are described down to their finger nails i.e. blonde hair and blue eyes, full lips etc. Why is the women aren't described but labeled as black woman? Readers aren’t dumb. There is nothing wrong with diversifying but damn let’s keep it real.

Another issue with this mainstreaming is former IR books now being offered as white books and free. Yes I am talking about a book in particular that was circulated in a group I was in. The book and I won’t name the book or the author but the book made #1 on AA list and IR but now the book is offered for free the female named is changed as well as her race and the author is labeling it MC?! Huh?! I mean come on. You want our money but we can’t be represented?

Back to the genre of women who look like us. Where are we represented these days? So many covers are dawning women whose race is so ambiguous I don’t know who or what I am reading about. Authors why label a book IR if you are so afraid to say what the woman is? It all comes back to money. Many know readers support and enjoy this genre so they cash in on the popularity. It’s honestly getting ridiculous.

Any way this is just my rant on a few things I have been noticing lately.

The Reading Room

According to onlineslangdictionary.com to read someone is defined as: To lecture someone with a sharply worded barrage of painful truths about themselves.

With all the mess and non-sense on social media and lately in most books I think a read is necessary.

  • Can anyone tell me what happened to love stories? Where the women had a backbone and abuse wasn’t considered being an alpha male and disguised as love. Don’t get me wrong I do read what is considered “dark” reads but it’s between two consensual adults. Lately these so called “dark” reads feature young kids and rape is considered ok because the so called hero had a bad past.  Does anyone else not see a red flag? I know there is an audience for this stuff. But what are we telling women about their experiences? I feel as a reader some subject matter should be handled with a little more care and tact. And this is from someone who read and went to see 50 Shades.

  • I miss knowing what characters look like and not having to guess. What’s up with ambiguous descriptions of characters or none at all?  For instance, the women are described in terms of food and objects like heart shaped face, bow lips, long hair down her butt, and my favorite creamy skin. What is that? Sounds like you are creating an avatar and not a character.

  • I agree reading has some element of fantasy but it was a time people read for both fantasy and to see a little bit of themselves in the stories. What happened to the stories with real women? Now they are all young, virgins, dating billionaires and blemish free. And the women writing them are real full figured women. Take a chance and write about something other than the mainstream cliché.

  • And for my ladies who write in the IR genre lately a lot or posts have been devoted to color not mattering but its contradictory to what many write in their books. For example, you don’t have to demonize black men i.e. present them as a thug, no good, deadbeat to make them more appealing against the white man your character wants to be with. Men are men no matter the color. If color doesn’t matter as many of these authors say then don’t put down one race to justify being with someone of another race. Love is love and no relationship is easy. Another issue about race and representation is that there is no representation. Well let me rephrase that diverse representation. Newsflash we are not all the same color with long flowing hair. Which many of these authors know because they look nothing like who and what they write about. All I can say is self-hate is real and is reflected so much in these IR groups. I just want to give many a bell hooks book and say have at.

  • Because this is a business and you want to put your best work out why not invest in a good editor and a few beta reader? Lately there has been issues with beta readers and arc’s being pirated which in itself is sad because it is stealing and not cool on any level. Nonetheless get a few well trusted people to help read and offer advice on your book. I have come in contact with many authors who don’t have either. Huh? Do you not want advice on your story outside of your FB group of fans? How can you be better without constructive criticism? I have people who reach out to me and say you spelled that wrong, or that sentence doesn’t make sense and I take what they said and correct it. I don’t cry, or post statuses about it for validation.

But I digress…..

  • I just miss good love stories. What I mean to say is romance. There is no romance, no courting, it’s just I want you let me stalk and obsess over you until you cave.

  •  Where is the plot in some of these books? What’s up with freaky/fetish titles and a book filled with sex scenes? I am no prude but I miss actual character interaction. I love a spicy love scene but some books well the ones lately you get to 13% in and already the characters are have raunchy sex and in love. Did it happen that fast? I read insta-love/lust stories but the authors rarely tell why the two are in love. Where is the connection? I know, I know its fiction but jeez.

  • And the trolls. Once you say something about any story its let me attack and defend. If the author isn’t saying anything why are you? Especially when readers who are the buyers are asking questions about a story?

  • Remember the days of getting paperbacks and your only correspondence was the sheet of paper in the back?

  • Also, tagging your books as cook or whatever not related to the book just so you can get #1 on Amazon. Really? Really?

  • My author friends I genuinely want to know what’s up with this phenomena of step-brother stories. Is it because its taboo?

Note these are just my thoughts as a reader and blogger so please don’t take offense. This post is not toward anyone person in general but what is reflected on social media.

Side note: Coming up in March a good friend and mentor of mine are partnering up for a few posts in a series featuring some very well-known authors. So please stay tuned.

Reviews vs. Opinions: Sorry I Don't Speak Basic

Recently I had a fellow reviewer comment with a five paragraph paper on why she thought my review on a book I rated three stars and she rated five was not to be taken seriously. The person went on to say that they were trying to help me understand the book and that my review wasn’t a review but in fact an opinion. Immediately I was thrown a back because this person was very delusional and went into a whole rant on what a relationship is and defined and gave examples of her relationship comparing it to the fictional characters in said book. They also went on to verbally attack me about how my review was a joke and to not be taken seriously. Of course I responded and let the person know that this was just my opinion and we don’t all like the same things.

The reviewer proceeded to tell me that my “review” wasn’t a review but an opinion.

So I decided in true CoCo fashion to educate this person and others who think that they can harass a person or expect a justification for one's opinion. I used Webster’s Dictionary to define the following words.

  • Book Review:  A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and merit. A book review can be a primary source opinion piece, summary review or scholarly review.
  • Opinion: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
The last time I checked book clubs were used for book discussion. The book in question had over a 100+ reviews and the fact that this person went trolling for reviews that they found didn’t line up with their opinion is a bit scary. To go as far as to write an elementary paper on why I didn’t understand the book and to attack me is just beyond. But….

This is part of the reason why people don’t review because delusional fangirls take fictional characters and fictional books way too seriously. Newsflash we don’t all like nor feel the same way about stuff. If we did how boring would the world be? I am all for book discussion but I don’t tolerate attacking or rudeness.

It’s nothing wrong with stating your opinion and why you like or dislike a book. But when you go to battle over one person’s review what purpose does it serve? Are you getting paid? Does this behavior help your favorite author?

Seriously have several because you are doing way to much for a book that you didn't even get paid for.

Again this is just an opinion about one bloggers experience with crazy fangirls. While you are trolling for reviews and getting upset over a review I'm laughing because its funny yet sad at the same time.

Oh The Shade!

As a person who loves to read and discussing books I thoroughly enjoy author groups and fan pages. It gives readers and bloggers the chance to interact with authors, and other readers amongst other things like contests and snippets. My issue with these mediums is that sometimes authors, admins and other readers use such platforms to bully and alienate others. It’s really sad and disheartening when you join a group and participate in discussion to get called out by admins because of difference of opinions. We are adults here although that doesn’t equate to maturity but, nonetheless, we are adults so why not agree to disagree?

I always mention that publishing books is a business for authors. In conjunction with publishing you must promote and market yourself. That means using social media to your advantage. Unfortunately most are about making friends and don’t want to rock the boat and stand for anything. For instance, when a group discussion occurs its understandable emotions run high and things can get taken out of context but it’s not ever okay to call out other readers and verbally attack them because they don’t agree with you. What’s worst is that when authors are notified about this they do nothing and stand by their admins or whomever. But the point is it will never be acceptable to sit back and allow someone to attack another. Understand that this hurts your brand and alienates readers who in turn pay you.

Maybe I should refresh people on what cyberbullying means. According to Webster dictionary Cyberbullying (noun) is defined as the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.

This definition is extended to memes as well. I think its comical how bullies talk in memes so since this is a language they understand here are a few memes for ya’!

I thought the purpose of these groups/pages was for readers to come together and discuss all things books. Unfortunately it is anything but. Most have become a cesspool of negativity and the discussions are rarely about books. Sadly I have witnessed this activity go one for way too long and it honestly turns me off from the authors since it is their group. So to all the bullies and others who condone this behavior here is a meme for you.

This is not the gospel but just one persons opinion about what I have seen and experienced in these groups. I would love to hear what other readers and authors hopefully have to say about this issue. I hope bullies take heed and authors realize that this behavior will not help you only hurt you. Please find yourselves......

Stop Posting and Publish!!!!

This is one of those what's up with that posts!

Let me start by saying that a lot of Indie authors do not write full time. For some that is a dream but as of right now many work full time jobs. Social media in my opinion has helped many Indie authors spread the word about their books. But sometimes social media can hurt your rather than help you. I completely understand books being delayed and wanting to get the work just right before you publish. Trust me I prefer you put your best work out instead of something to please fans.

My issue is that so many authors are doing all these posts on social media about personal drama and I really want to say, "save that for the book you are supposed to be publishing." Don't get me wrong I know authors are people as well and have lives. But please create a personal page and stop putting all of your personal business on your author page. It honestly turns fans off more than anything. I personally prefer drama in books.

Everyday its a new post about this that and the third but no book in sight for years. Which begs the question at what point do readers get tired of waiting? Especially if they see their favorite authors flooding timelines but when asked about said book it's nearly finished. This is just my opinion as one blogger and avid reader.

What's Up With That?

In the author/reading world there will always be a what’s up with that question to be asked. I have noticed a trend with authors as of late and I honestly can’t help but ask the question what’s up with that?

Authors who have other authors as their beta readers. What happened with getting a reader as a beta reader? I understand authors are readers as well but because more than likely these people are your friends they will not be very objective in their assessment of your work. Versus say a reader who you are actually selling to. Not to sound rude but aren’t these other authors your competition and lets be real some of them will sabotage you. I am all for uplifting other women but this is a business. For instance you get a focus group (those who are your target audience) to give their honest opinion on the product. You do not go to the competition another company to review your product.

Another side-eye moment is the fact that some authors charge for snippets. I noticed a few authors have blogs that they charge readers for to read their work. Who does that? When Amazon samples are free. Seriously you charge your fans for your blog posts on your books. Listen newsletters, blog posts, and snippets are free!!!!! This is pure foolishness. Which brings me to my other issue authors who over share. I love a good sneak peek every now and then but when an author shares 3-4 snippets a day everyday as a reader I feel like I know the story and now will be less likely to one-click. I think it has to be a happy medium share just enough to whet the appetite. I understand you want to keep readers interested and its good marketing but some authors share so much when the book has no release date in sight.

Keep in mind these posts are not about one author in particular but issues I have seen as one reader and blogger on social media.

What's Up With That?

*** Disclaimer**** The purpose of this post is not to attack anyone personally or any one author in particular. Its to bring attention to a few issues I have noticed as a reader and blogger within the IR community. This is not the gospel just one person's opinion. We all have them but leave your negative comments to yourself.

It’s been awhile since I have done a “what’s up with that post” I only do these when something triggers it. My fellow blogger and friend Musings of an IR Junkie recently did a blog post about how there is no U.N.I.T.Y. in the IR (Interracial) genre. This post was one of those triggers as well as the foolishness I have been seeing on social media and Amazon.

Here goes……

Regarding no unity being in the IR community the simple fact is that there is none. I don’t want to rehash everything that was said but I will add my spin on it. This is a business first and foremost. As an author you are your own brand. So I don’t understand how you expect to sell if you don’t market yourself. I am speaking of the authors who only stay within their own group and don’t step outside of their circle or clique. Frankly speaking you don’t support others but want to get in your group and whine woe is me. Newsflash: You Get What You Give!!!! I have seen new authors come in and do blog takeovers, offer contests, and hold discussions about their up and coming books. For a genre that was made for us by us I don’t get why we tear each other down. I have seen authors allow their admins, and street teams bully reviewers, fans and other authors. Are you that insecure that you will tear a fellow author down? And you wonder why your stuff doesn’t even make the U.S.A. bestseller list. Focus more on actual writing quality work then what others are doing. It doesn’t take anything from you to help another author out.

On the flipside you do have authors who support each other but they only support those who fit inside of their clique. Like I mentioned earlier this is a business shouldn’t you be focused on making sales? I think it’s funny when some of these authors take to their social media and post all about love and harmony but then the mean girl comes out. It’s really sad that some people are stuck in high school. I believe the lack of unity and support of fellow authors hurt this genre. Maybe it's why the genre is seen as a joke? This is displayed by the fetish type books that are now flooding the genre. We have some very talented authors in this genre but the talent is overshadowed by the bad behavior and blatant lack of support amongst fellow authors and fans.

Now regarding the fans lack of support:

I have seen fans say that they don’t support some authors because of how they were treated in groups or the author’s disposition. The fact of the matter is social media is a blessing and a curse but a necessary evil. For instance an author commented on an Amazon review after her fan girls attacked the reviewer for a difference in opinion. Really? Is it that serious? Why do you care about what one person is saying about you when majority of the reviews are all positive? Not everyone will like you. Hell I know many don’t like me or my reviews/posts. And guess what? That’s fine because no one pays my bills. Back to the issue at hand. Well this author goes on and on about how they don’t read reviews and so forth but explains why the reviewer’s issue with the book were unfounded. First many complain because they don’t get reviews and now you want to tell a person how they should review? Do you see why reviewers get frustrated? Who has that kind of time? My issue is that this behavior turned me completely off from the author. Your admins represent you. Granted you can’t control other grown people but you can correct behavior. I still don’t understand why fan girls and admins spew such hate. Are you getting paid? More than likely you are getting free books. Which in itself is laughable going all out of your way  to bully another for what a $5.00 book. Honey if it’s that serious e-mail me and I will send you the book.

I understand reviews help authors but the fact of the matter is some simply don’t review. I have seen posts where people mention that their t.b.r. pile is so long. You know that that means? Maybe they just haven’t had time to review your book yet. And then some simply don’t like to review. Who am I to judge them or condemn them? Heck at least they bought the book when most are pirating books these days. The point is pick your battles. You know what I miss? Book chats/character chats. Lately these groups have been flooded with penis pictures or what’s happening in pop culture. I feel like we should all get back to basics. It’s only so much bloggers can do to help.

My other issue is the darkened photo covers on books. I know that there are select stock photos to choose from but just like with this genre create them. Please don’t darken photos it looks cheesy and fans aren’t stupid. Another issue I have seen as a trend as of late is the demonizing of black men in these books. It’s as if the black woman in the book can only be with the white man because the black man was this horrible monster. What is that? So in order to date a white man, black men have to dog you out? In the beginning the reason why I loved IR books was because it didn't focus more so on race but on the love story itself. Not that I don't enjoy stories that discuss race in books because lets be honest race is still an issue with some but be tactful in how you handle the issue of race.

Also what’s up with the lack of descriptions of the women in these books? Are you trying to appeal to a larger audience or don’t feel the descriptions are necessary? I genuinely want to know.

To sum all of this long post up:  We have to support one another and get over our own insecurities it’s enough room in this genre for everyone. Step outside of your groups and your fantasy world and support, like some posts, hell say thank you to your supporters.

What's Up With That Part Deux

A while back I had this post I called, “What’s Up With That”  where I just vent about what I have noticed going on in the “author” world. For me it’s a venting session as a reader not to bash any author but just to question some things that I feel are important. I think social media can either help or hurt many authors. The help part is that we as readers get to see snippets of upcoming books, teasers etc. The hurt part is that some author’s like many people share way too much on social media to the point where for me it will turn you off. I know you may say CoCo it’s their Facebook page and if you don’t like it don’t watch. Which is true but what happens when author’s share too much on their author pages? I feel like as a reader and blogger at times I have to censor some of what I want to say because some authors not all see it as a personal attack one or two they don’t like an opposing opinion and their fan girls end up bullying you. And sometimes the criticism or whatever the issue is can be seen as helpful and great dialogue between author and reader.

Lately I have noticed many authors posting about book reviews and how important they are. And I would completely agree. Reviews are important for the author and other readers. But on the flipside I have seen many readers comment about how long their t.b.r. (to be read) list is so long they have yet to tackle it. Here comes the issue! Recently an author posted that she is considering no longer writing because of low reviews and so forth. My issue is writing is a business. Many authors have street teams, Facebook pages, book chats, etc. How do you expect reader support and loyalty when you don’t engage your readers? (This is not directed at this particular author just stating an issue I see in general) Which leads me back to the social media issue. Back in the day we never had social media an author would release a book once a year and in the back of the paperback would be a card where you could write the author. (Sometimes I miss those days) In the world of instant gratification and social media, over sharing between readers and authors alike the lines have blurred. Where readers think they “know” the authors on some personal level based on what they share. I am getting off subject. My issue with the post about basically retiring from writing is that isn’t this your craft? I don’t understand if a person is passionate about something nothing should detour you. It’s not going to be a smooth road. Why not go to the readers, back to the drawing board and revamp yourself. I would love others take on this issue. Because I was rather annoyed myself about this issue.

My next issue is that because publishing has become so easy I feel everyone is doing it. Especially in the IR (Interracial) genre it has become flooded with fetish type books. And I’m sure there is an audience out there for that. But it makes the rest of the books in the genre look like a joke. Another issue is the lack of stories with substance, plots, descriptions, and just plain lack of story. Lately there has been a trend of really short stories that are overpriced. Now I don’t mind paying for a story if it is a complete story. I recently saw an author post that her story for 80 pages priced at $5.99 in her eyes was reasonable because that’s a lot for her to write. Ummmm….isn’t writing what you do? My thing is that the stories lack substance it’s more sex and less story and just when the story begins it ends. Also the lack of descriptions. How can one read a story without having any physical descriptions of the characters? What color are the characters? And why are the characters color being described in terms of food? I know for myself when I read a story I like to picture what the characters look like. I can’t fully engaged in the book without a good grasp on who I am reading about.
Last Issue I promise!!!! Please stop oversharing! The thing with social media is you control what you share. I understand being close with your readers but it’s a fine line between what you share and shouldn’t share. I have seen authors post so much about their personal life drama I wonder why not write a book on it? I appreciate the authors who engage with their readers because many don’t. But at the end of the day this is a business. Marketing and how you brand yourself is important. Please let me know what you think about this issue. Even if you feel differently than I.

Side note I have noticed lately I have been doing less reviewing and more cover reveals. Not that I mind doing the cover reveals but I am going to get back to basics and try to focus more on my reviews. So be prepared more of CoCo Fierce is yet to come. xoxoxox
