The Parking Lot Attendant By Nafkote Tamirat

Synopsis:

A mesmerizing, indelible coming-of-age story about a girl in Boston's tightly-knit Ethiopian community who falls under the spell of a charismatic hustler out to change the world
A haunting story of fatherhood, national identity, and what it means to be an immigrant in America today, Nafkote Tamirat's The Parking Lot Attendant explores how who we love, the choices we make, and the places we’re from combine to make us who we are.
The story begins on an undisclosed island where the unnamed narrator and her father are the two newest and least liked members of a commune that has taken up residence there. Though the commune was built on utopian principles, it quickly becomes clear that life here is not as harmonious as the founders intended. After immersing us in life on the island, our young heroine takes us back to Boston to recount the events that brought her here. Though she and her father belong to a wide Ethiopian network in the city, they mostly keep to themselves, which is how her father prefers it.
This detached existence only makes Ayale’s arrival on the scene more intoxicating. The unofficial king of Boston’s Ethiopian community, Ayale is a born hustler―when he turns his attention to the narrator, she feels seen for the first time. Ostensibly a parking lot attendant, Ayale soon proves to have other projects in the works, which the narrator becomes more and more entangled in to her father’s growing dismay. By the time the scope of Ayale’s schemes―and their repercussions―become apparent, our narrator has unwittingly become complicit in something much bigger and darker than she ever imagined.

The Thick of Things By J.L. Campbell

Synopsis

GENRE: women's fiction with romantic elements, contemporary romance

BLURB: Life has a way of going awry when you least expect it, and Khalila Skyers learns this lesson the hard way. In one devastating blow after another, she loses her cosy existence. Then Douglas Blythe overtakes her life like a flood, and she’s not equipped to deal with an attraction that seems forbidden and overwhelming. But her body and heart want what they want, and leave her wondering if she ever knew herself at all.

Douglas is determined to help Khalila move beyond her obsession with the past and reach for love a second time. No matter how long it takes. No matter the distance. He’s going to prove he’s worth the risk.

This was my first read by this author and this book felt like nostalgia for me. For me this book was romance at its truest form. Yes there was a hint of drama but it didn’t over take the story. Khalila is stuck in limbo. She is trying to hold onto a marriage that’s dead and certain parts of her past she has yet to find peace with. Douglas is a true man! He is a gentleman but knows what he wants. I loved that he was so blunt with Khalilia.

As a reader we got to see these two really date and the courtship process. Let me say home girl went on some good dates and the night caps!!!! I understood with Khalila wasn’t so trusting, her ex was a piece of work. I wanted a times to be like this man is genuinely asking about you why don’t you just tell him? I did not like that she was so hung up with the opinions of others. This is why I think she and Douglas made such a good match, he really was an example of truly living. Some parts the book kind of dragged a bit and I wished for a bit more of a climax. For instance when the ex comes over that whole scene and her reaction. That was a perfect point to release that burden of the past. I wanted a little more from the ending but I felt it was real. These characters don’t have it figured out and Khalilia is growing but not fully there yet. I would love to see more from these characters almost like a finally chapter. All in all I really enjoyed this book it was old school romance for me. Ladies if you are looking for a read that will have you smiling and so relatable this is the read for you.

Wicked Wages Texas vs. Brooklyn 1 By Laquette

Blurb:

Dr. Mandisa Avery is a Brooklyn chemist who's lost sight of her life outside the dreams her late mother left her to fulfill. With too many late nights spent in her office working, she's burned out and desperate for a change.

Slade Hamilton is a Texas businessman who adores ranch life. He'd love nothing more than to spend his days tilling his land. However, his inherent need to protect his family legacy from his hateful father keeps him and his future tied to a desk at Logan Industries.

When a lucrative business opportunity forces their paths to cross, Mandisa and Slade must each make a decision: risk it all on undeniable attraction, or hedge their bets to save their hearts and their respective businesses from ruin.

Will they fold, or will they risk it all on a wicked wager?

This novel is a fun and sexy, 80,000-word, erotic romance. It features a hot cowboy from Texas who meets his smart, fiery competition in the form of a concrete princess from Brooklyn. Place your bets on who's going to win this wicked wager.

Review:

She inherited her mother’s business but she has dreams of her own. Mandisa is head strong but never gets the chance to let go. Slade is straight up Southern Charm after all everything is bigger in Texas. This story started off as insta-lust. You know the girl meets boy in bar they hook up and BOOM. Except this boom has strings attached. These two share more in common than just a physically attraction. Slade wants to buy out Sweet Sadie ( Mandisa cosmetic line), this is her chance to pursue other things but Slade has raised the stakes and offered more than just a business proposal. I loved how the author showed Slade’s background and we got to meet Mama Indy. I will say Mama Indy is like that sweet grandmother that doesn’t play games.

This story contained so many relatable characters that as a reader you wanted to know. Kandi was Mandisa best friend and didn’t mind checking her friend when needed. I for one cannot wait to read more of her and Aaron’s story.

Although Mandisa and Slade have this instant attraction he still has to earn her trust. I loved getting to see these two grow as characters. This is a romance thrown in with a little drama. I won’t give too much away but, Bull is a character who names suites him. I loved how the author had a message in this story and the issue of representation in cosmetics is BIG. This story was fully fleshed and the characters developed. I do wish more from the ending. This story didn’t quite feel finished to me. I felt more from the characters was needed. Hopefully they will make an appearance in the next story. Readers if you are looking for a quick read with a hint of drama, CLICK UP

Allegedly By Tiffany D. Jackson

Synopsis:

Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myer’s Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting debut by Tiffany D. Jackson about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home.
Mary B. Addison killed a baby.
Allegedly. She didn’t say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it?
There wasn’t a point to setting the record straight before, but now she’s got Ted—and their unborn child—to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary’s fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

The Back Cover:

Mary B. Addison killed a baby.

The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it? She wouldn't say.

Mary survived six years in baby jail before being dumped in a group home. The house isn't really "home"--no place where you fear for your life can be considered a home. Home is Ted, who she meets on assignment at a nursing home.

There wasn't a point to setting the record straight before, but now she's got Ted--and their unborn child--to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary must find the voice to fight her past. And her fate lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

In this gritty and haunting debut, Tiffany D. Jackson explores the gray areas in our understanding of justice, family, and truth, acknowledging the light and darkness alive in all of us.

Review:

First off let me say that I love the Boom!!! When the author first started off with the Mayson men I was in love. Now the kids have their own Boom and as reader and fan it’s like catching up with family members. However, the last few books in the Until series have been lackluster for me. I am hoping the Until Kindle Words version will revitalize this series. Although this story wasn’t my favorite it wasn’t bad either.

Can we just talk about that cover for a second? I think this is one of the hottest covers in this series. Ok so on to this story.

Harmony is one of Nico’s twins (I say that because they all have a bunch of kids and it’s hard to keep up); She has her entire life planned out, her “goals” as she calls them. A few months ago she saves Harlen’s life and since then she cannot get him out of her head. The way the author described this bad boy with a heart who could? I did like that this wasn’t an insta-love type book. Harmony is so hot and cold with him at times. He makes her question everything. I liked that he respected her goals and wanted to build upon them. Now you know Nico is going to have something to say about someone in any of his girls lives. He tries his hardest to discourage Harlen who proves he is not a punk and will fight for what he believes in. Of course with that last name Mayson there is drama. I will say I felt like the drama in this book was a little forced but liked the message behind it in light of what’s happening in the world. I felt like it was too many unnecessary details at times and the romance was missing.

Harmony is in her head a lot. For instance, the bar scene, I had to read twice. I really couldn’t understand what she was mad at or why she didn’t talk to him. I thought she was a little young and immature. I find it interesting that with these last few books the author doesn’t mention ages at all. I wonder how old Harmony was she was on her way to be a nurse, July had her own practice; Ashlyn was in a dentist office but no ages or time periods given.

I loved that Harlen was not playing games with Harmony. She tried to put him off but he laid it all on the line for her. Ladies that cabin scene was HOT!!! I think this book could have done more with building the attraction and relationship between the two. The connection was lost on me. And the author relied on too many unnecessary details in the story. I felt like the author recycled a lot of the other plots from her previous books in this one. I will say one highlight of the story for me was the introduction of Cobi and Hadley. While this wasn’t one of my favorites, I am still a fan. I look forward to reading Cobi’s story
